E and C Pack Punch Against Alzheimer's Disease
The January issue of The Archives of Neurology (2004, vol. 61, no.1:82-88), told how elderly people may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by adding Vitamins C and E to their diets. Researchers followed up on 4,740 subjects 65 years or older from 1995 to 2000, noting their supplement use They checked for new cases of dementia or AD. The greatest improvement was in those who used vitamins E and C in combination with multivitamins.
Folic Acid & B12 May Decrease Stroke Risk Strokes caused by a blocked artery were fewer amongst 43,372 men who took Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid. But haemorrhagic strokes (caused by a blood vessel bursting in the brain) were not affected. This is according to research at Harvard University. The men were checked every four years from 1986 to 2000. During that time 455 had strokes caused by a blocked artery and 125 from haemorrhage. Another 145 strokes were recorded but type of stroke was unknown. Those consuming most Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid had the fewest numbers of blocked artery strokes.
In Italy, police are investigating 4,400 doctors who may be involved in a £152 Million 'incentive scheme' with UK drugs giant Glaxo-Smith-Kline. It's expected that heads will roll - unless the drugs manufacturers use their enormous wealth to ease the pressure.
Parents Pressured To Keep Kids On Drugs It's getting serious: drugs manufacturers have too much power. So much that their minions - the puppets that dance on their strings - are putting pressure on parents to keep their children on drugs. In Germany a young boy, Dominik was getting good results from a nutritional treatment of his cancer. His parents wanted what was best for Dominik. Now they're in trouble! It's happening in the USA too. A boy who was on the drug Ritalin for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), was having problems sleeping and a poor appetite. So his dad took him off the drug. As a result, Dad was warned that if he didn't put the boy back on the drug he'd be charged with child abuse and neglect! So when is it going to happen in the UK? Tony Blair already acts like The Godfather, overriding the wishes of the electorate. Something like this would be right up his street. And I'm not politically minded.

If it's a similar situation to the USA, in that some manufacturers use it and some don't, it could account for the different opinions over the safety or otherwise of MMR Vaccine.

C May Help Prevent Arthritis
A link between low Vitamin C intake and arthritis showed up in research at Cambridge and Manchester Universities. 25,000 people had their health and diet assessed. They were then followed-up, over an eight-year period, to see who developed inflammatory arthritis. Over
the eight years, 73 cases arose. It was clear from findings that low
intakes of vitamin C were associated with a greater risk of inflammatory

Popeye was still around he'd be a seven stone weakling! That's according to Richard & Judy in their Daily Express column on Saturday 14th Feb 2004. They were commenting on the latest report on the vastly reduced nutritional content in our fruits and veg today. They said that if our food had been in such a poor state during World War II the nation would have been knackered. Thank goodness for nutritional supplements that provide all we need. Not what the RDAs say we need. They're well out of date. Just like one tablet a day multivitamins - almost useless!
Soy Protects Diabetics' Kidneys A small trial conducted on 14 type 2 Diabetics showed that soy protein protected kidneys. The patients changed from a diet of 70% animal protein and 30% vegetable protein, to 35% animal, 30% vegetable and 35% Soy protein. Total cholesterol, LDL (the bad sort) and triglycerides all dropped significantly. This was published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol 57, 2003.
Cinnamon Reduces High Blood Sugar Less than a half teaspoon a day of cinnamon reduced blood sugar levels of 60 Type 2 diabetics in Pakistan who took part in a study published in the December 2003 issue of Diabetes Care. In type 2 diabetes, either the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin or the body can't correctly use it. (Insulin is a hormone that regulates sugar metabolism.) The result? Unhealthy levels of sugar circulate in the blood, instead of providing energy to muscles. Blood sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels fell by 20% in volunteers eating less than 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day for 40 days. They noted no advantage in taking more. When they stopped taking cinnamon, blood sugar levels started climbing again.
